Care and Cleaning
Jewelry is a precious possession that is designed and crafted to last a lifetime. However, proper care is required to assure the lasting qualities of your jewelry. FAPPAC.com is pleased to offer simple guidelines for the care and cleaning of your jewelry.
-Store your jewelry in a clean, dry place.
-Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case, or in a box with compartments and dividers. If you prefer to use ordinary boxes, wrap each piece individually in soft tissue paper.
-Don't jumble your jewelry pieces in a drawer or jewelry case. Pieces can scratch each other.
-Be careful when removing your jewelry to wash your hands. Do not leave your jewelry on the rim of a sink where it can easily slip down the drain.
Sterling Silver Jewelry
Sterling silver, like other precious metals, can oxidize with time. But properly maintained silver jewelry improves with age and develops a lush patina. Treat your silver well, care for it properly and it will reward you with a long life and a lustrous look.
-Clean your silver jewelry with a mild soap and water solution, allowing the water to bead up, and then pat dry with a soft cloth. For more stubborn dirt, use a jewelry cleaner designed for silver use.
-Store your silver in a cool, dry place, preferably in a tarnish-preventive bag or wrapped in a soft piece of felt or cloth. Store pieces individually, so that they don't knock together and scratch.
-Do not rub silver with anything other than a polishing cloth or a fine piece of felt. Tissue paper or paper towels can cause scratches because of the fibers in these products.
-Make sure your silver is not exposed to air and light during storage - this can cause silver to tarnish. And don't wear sterling silver in chlorinated water or when working with household chemicals.
1. Keep your fashion jewelry dry and clean
One of the best advice to keep the luster and beauty of fashion jewelry is to keep them clean and dry. Whether it is a necklace, ring, bracelet or earrings, exposing fashion jewelry to any type of cream, chemical product, lotion, perfume, oil or even water is an undeniable accelerator of tarnishing. Metals like brass, copper or bronze will oxidize and see their color changing (verdigris) and jewelry silver or gold platings will chip. So make sure to always remove your jewelry before applying cream, perfume or when you wash your hands. It is also very important in order to limit the greenish traces that some fashion jewelry leave on the skin.
2. Wear your costume jewelry occasionally
Do not forget to give your costume jewelry a little break from time to time. Fashion jewelry is usually not meant to be worn every day. Therefore, if you wear the same pieces of jewelry on a daily basis, you might see discoloration coming quickly. To preserve the life of your jewelry, change it as often as possible by varying the outfits. As they are pretty affordable, do not hesitate to buy for example two or three fashion necklaces in the same style and alternate them.
3. Remove your costume jewelry when you have no use to wear it
We have just seen above that we should not wear the same costume jewelry daily, but it is also important to remove them at the end of the day. Never go to sleep with fashion jewelry on, it is a sure way to damage it, to make it tarnish more quickly or even break it. And besides damaging your jewelry, it could also color, injure or scratch your skin. This advice also applies when you exercise, when you go to the pool etc. The green traces left on the skin (particularly by fashion rings) are due to a chemical reaction between the metal and the acidity of the skin. The sweat will naturally tend to amplify it. Finally, for any activity that does not require the presence of costume jewelry, go without!
4. Always clean your fashion jewelry after wearing
Another tip to make you costume jewelry look its best as long as possible is to clean them after each use. This may seem a little laborious, but it's actually very useful to see your jewelry last! Some soap, oil or perfume may have accidentally get on your skin while you wear your ring, earrings, necklace or bracelet. So clean them, or at least wipe them down with a soft cloth to remove any product residues and sweat that accelerates oxidation. Avoid at all costs cleaners that contain acid, alcohol, vinegar or ammonia, since they can damage your jewelry, and always make sure that your jewelry is completely clean and dry before storing !
5. Store your fashion jewelry carefully
We all have our tastes and habits when it comes to store jewelry. In jewelry boxes, pouches, loose in a drawer…We do not always know, but the best way to prevent tarnishing, chipping, knots in chains and breakage is to store fashion jewelry individually, for example in cotton or velvet pouches. Fashion necklaces must vertically hung on hooks and the pieces of fashion jewelry should not be in contact with one another and especially not with your precious jewelry that could suffer from corrosion.
6. Do not coat your costume jewelry
Some people like to coat fashion jewelry with different products, but this is actually not recommended. Coating may change the appearance and color of your jewelry and tarnish its shine. In addition, it will eventually come off, causing your fashion jewelry gold or silver plating chipping. Although in theory, wiping and cleaning fashion jewelry is sufficient to limit the green traces on the skin, you can still use clear nail polish (like top coat) on the inside of your fashion rings to protect them.
